Looking For a Remote Job
Whether you're seeking full-time remote employment or just getting your foot in the door with freelance gigs, these tips will prepare you to land a remote position.
But before you get started, it's important to know that not every remote role is actually remote! Some positions that are advertised as remote in the US or other parts of the world may only be considered remote if you're working in the same country or in countries where the company has established entities. You can find out more about why this is happening right here.
Here are a few things you should know before you start your search for your next remote gig:
1. Know Where to Look
There are numerous online platforms that serve as treasure troves for remote work. Consider websites such as We Work Remotely, Remote.co, and FlexJobs as the major players in this field. They provide a diverse range of opportunities, spanning from tech to teaching. Below, you will find a list of sites where you can discover these remote job opportunities.
However, don’t just stick to general job boards like Indeed or LinkedIn, although they are handy too. Dive into niche sites that focus on specific industries or types of remote work. And don't forget about company websites – many organizations list their remote opportunities right on their careers page.
2. Leverage Your Network
Remember the saying, "It's not what you know, but who you know"? Well, it's kind of true in the remote job hunt game. Networking is key! Start with your existing contacts – friends, family, former colleagues – and let them know you're on the lookout for remote work.
Social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn, can be goldmines for networking. Join groups related to remote work, participate in discussions, and connect with people in your field. You never know who might have the perfect lead for you.
3. Look Out for Scams
Let’s not sugarcoat it – where there are job seekers, there are scammers. Remote job scams can be particularly sneaky, so keep your wits about you. Red flags include jobs that seem too good to be true (like outrageous pay for minimal work), requests for personal financial information, or any scenario where you're asked to pay money upfront.
When in doubt, do your research! Check company reviews, search for additional information online, and trust your gut.
4. Stay Organized and Persistent
When it comes to job hunting, particularly for remote roles, it's important to remember that it's more like a marathon than a sprint. It requires endurance, perseverance, and strategic planning.
In order to navigate this process successfully, it's crucial to stay organized and keep track of your applications. Maintain a record of where and when you've applied, and don't forget to follow up when appropriate.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t hear back immediately. Persistence is key in the remote job market!
5. Embrace Flexibility
Finally, be open to exploring a wide range of opportunities for remote work. It's important to keep in mind that there are various avenues to consider, such as full-time positions, freelance gigs, or part-time roles.
Embracing different types of remote work can provide valuable experiences that will not only contribute to your professional growth but also help you sharpen and diversify your skill set.
Each opportunity you come across is like a stepping stone in your remote work journey, leading you closer to achieving your goals and expanding your horizons. So, embrace the possibilities and seize every chance to learn and develop as you navigate the world of remote work.

How To Find Remote Jobs on LinkedIn
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to find remote jobs on LinkedIn:
To access the Jobs section on LinkedIn, log in to your account and proceed to the sidebar menu or visit the following link: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/
You can also add a title for your role and location. You have the option to use your location (country) or simply go with "Remote". Speaking of location, it's always better to mention a specific country like the United States, European Union, or a particular country, instead of just saying "remote" or your city.
This way, you'll have a better chance of finding a list of available roles in that specific location. Just keep in mind that some jobs listed as remote in the US may not be available in your location if they are exclusively remote for the US.
Why? Because not every remote role is truly remote! That's why I wrote an article called "How can you find out if a job can be done remotely?" Check it out!
Alternatively, you can click on the filters drop-down menu on the left and check the box for "Remote". Just make sure to toggle it on.
If needed, you can further refine your search by location, job title, company, and more. But remember to keep the "Remote" option checked.
You can also click on "Easy Apply" to get a list of jobs that give you an option to apply with one click. If you choose this option, your existing LinkedIn profile will be submitted as your application.
Just a quick note: If your LinkedIn profile isn't stellar, I wouldn't recommend doing that! You'll only be sharing a profile that lacks important information, which could result in rejection.
Extra tips:
Make sure to tailor your LinkedIn profile to highlight relevant experience and skills before applying.
Follow companies you’re interested in to get notified when they post new remote openings.
Join relevant LinkedIn groups and engage with the community to network and uncover leads.
Check back frequently and set up job alerts to be notified of the latest remote roles matching your search criteria.
Where to Find Remote Jobs
Now you know some top places to find remote job listings, like specialized job boards and LinkedIn. But don't limit your search to just these platforms. It's important to cast a wide net in your remote job hunt.
Look for open positions directly on company career pages, as many don't advertise all roles on job sites. Tap into your personal and professional networks and let them know you're seeking a remote role - internal referrals can be crucial.
Tailor your resume and LinkedIn to prominently feature any past remote work experience you have, as this will grab a hiring manager's attention. During interviews, prepare thoughtful questions to ask about the company's remote culture, tools, and policies to demonstrate your interest and capabilities.
If a role you're interested in isn't fully remote, inquire about the possibility of negotiating a partial or trial work-from-home arrangement. Consider starting with a hybrid schedule if needed to get your foot in the door.
The key is being proactive and using multiple approaches in your search process. You can land a fantastic remote job with persistence and creativity.
