Land Your Job Faster: A Strategic Job Search Approach
Discover how a personalized job search strategy can help you secure your next job. Learn from the real success story of a job seeker like yourself.
When it comes to finding your dream job, having a well-defined job search strategy can make all the difference. Many job seekers spend countless hours applying to numerous positions, only to face frustration and disappointment when their efforts don't yield the desired results.
By adopting a more strategic approach, you can save valuable time and significantly increase your chances of landing the perfect role. In this article, I'll share the story of a job seeker who reached out to me and the data she shared with me (with her permission) from her two job searches.
Jane's Initial Struggles
A few months ago, I was contacted by a job seeker, let's call her Jane, who was feeling frustrated and overwhelmed by her job search. Nine months ago, she was looking for a job, but due to layoffs, she found herself starting the process all over again after just two months in a new job.
Jane shared with me that her previous search had been incredibly frustrating, and she had to apply to a staggering 984 jobs just to receive two offers. As you can see in the picture below, out of those 984 applications, she received only 27 calls from recruiters, which led to 19 first-round interviews.
From there, she progressed to 5 second-round interviews and ultimately received 2 job offers. The entire process had taken her almost five months, and she was determined not to spend that much time on her job search again.
Analyzing the Problem
To help Jane, I began by thoroughly reviewing all the job descriptions she had saved and comparing them against her resume. What I discovered was eye-opening: 72% of the roles she had applied for were not a good match for her skills and experience.
The majority of these mismatches stemmed from three main reasons:
She didn't meet 70% or more of the listed requirements for the positions.
The roles were located in countries where she was unable to work without a visa.
The positions were not remote, even though she specifically wanted to find remote roles, and relocation was not an option.
Based on her resume, it wasn't really clear if she was the right fit for the role.
It became clear that her approach to applying for positions was not as targeted as it could have been. By applying to roles that were not a strong match for her skills, location preferences, and work authorization, she was investing a significant amount of time and energy into applications that were unlikely to result in interviews or offers.
The two job offers she received resulted from applying to positions through LinkedIn, Indeed, and other job boards.
This is what the job search looks like if we take out all the roles she doesn't match up with.
As we dug deeper into the data, it became apparent that if she had been more strategic in her job search from the beginning, the outcome could have been very different.
With a more targeted approach, she likely would have:
Significantly reduced the overall time spent on her job search
Avoided attending 3 interviews for roles that were not a good fit
Still progressed to the five second-round interviews and received two offers
Seeing the potential benefits of a more targeted job search strategy was a real eye-opener for Jane. By focusing her efforts on positions that were a strong match for her skills, experience, and preferences, she could have saved a tremendous amount of time and energy.
Armed with this knowledge, we set out to create a personalized job search plan that would help her optimize her efforts and achieve her goals more efficiently.
Developing a Personalized Job Search Plan
To help Jane create a tailored job search strategy, we began by setting clear goals and establishing a plan of action. The first step was to have an in-depth discussion about her career aspirations, target industries, and desired role types. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of her objectives, we were able to develop a plan that was customized to her specific needs.
The job search plan we created included the following key components:
Identifying target companies
We researched and compiled a list of companies that aligned with her goals and values, focusing on organizations that were known for offering the type of roles she was seeking.
Optimizing her online presence
We reviewed and refined her LinkedIn profile and resume to ensure they effectively showcased her skills and experiences, making her a compelling candidate for her target roles.
Networking strategy
We developed a plan for her to leverage her existing network and build new connections within her target industries, including strategies for reaching out to professionals in her field and securing informational interviews.
Application approach
We established criteria for identifying roles that were a strong match for her qualifications, ensuring that she would focus her efforts on opportunities that were most likely to lead to success.
Tracking and accountability
We set up a system for tracking her progress, including the number of applications submitted, interviews secured, and feedback received. We also scheduled regular check-in meetings to review her results and make any necessary adjustments to her strategy.
Jane was keeping tabs on her search with some tools like Huntr and Teal.
By creating a comprehensive job search plan tailored to her specific goals and needs, Jane was equipped with a roadmap for success. The plan provided structure and direction, helping her to stay focused and motivated throughout the job search process.
To ensure that she stayed on track and received the support she needed, we scheduled four biweekly sync meetings. During these meetings, we would discuss her progress, review her job search data, and make any necessary adjustments to her strategy based on the results she was seeing.
With a personalized job search plan in place and a commitment to regular check-ins and progress tracking, Jane was ready to embark on a more strategic and efficient job search journey.
Implementing the Strategy
Armed with a personalized job search plan, Jane was ready to put her new strategy into action. The first step was to optimize her online presence, starting with her LinkedIn profile and resume. We worked together to tailor these key tools to highlight her strengths and experiences in a way that would resonate with her target employers.
By ensuring that her profile and resume accurately reflected her qualifications and value proposition, she was better positioned to attract the attention of recruiters and hiring managers in her desired field.
Next, we focused on implementing a targeted application approach. Rather than applying to every job posting that seemed remotely relevant, Jane committed to only applying for roles that matched at least 70% of her qualifications.
This ensured that she was investing her time and energy into opportunities that were a strong fit for her skills and experience, increasing her chances of securing interviews and offers.
To further increase her visibility and attract potential job opportunities, Jane embraced a proactive networking strategy. Each day, she committed to sending at least three+ targeted (connection requests, InMails, or emails) to professionals in her field, introducing herself and expressing interest in their work.
She also made a point of engaging with her existing network, reaching out to at least 3-5 people per day from her LinkedIn connections (2,143 people at the time). During these interactions, she inquired about potential job openings and requested informal coffee chats with hiring managers to learn more about their companies and opportunities.
In addition to her networking efforts, she also focused on creating valuable content on LinkedIn. Each week, she committed to writing two posts that showcased her industry insights and experiences, helping to establish her as a knowledgeable and engaged professional in her field. To ensure that her posts were of the highest quality and effectively showcased her strengths, I provided guidance and feedback on her content and wrote a few of those posts for her to start.
The Remarkable Results
Jane's commitment to implementing her personalized job search strategy paid off in a big way. By embracing a targeted approach and focusing her efforts on opportunities that were a strong match for her skills and experience, she was able to achieve remarkable results in a fraction of the time she had spent on her previous job search.
Let's take a look at Jane's job search statistics:
Applications submitted: 122
Calls from recruiters: 21
First-round interviews: 19
Second-round interviews: 11
Job offers: 4
Compared to her previous job search, which took 139 days and yielded only 2 offers from 984 applications, her new strategy was a resounding success. By focusing on quality over quantity and leveraging a multi-faceted approach, she was able to secure 4 job offers in just 67 days.
She got four job offers – one from applying, two through referrals, and one because a recruiter slid into her LinkedIn DMs.
Not only did Jane achieve better results in terms of interviews and offers, but she also significantly reduced the time and energy she invested in the job search process. By being strategic and selective in her applications, she avoided wasting time on opportunities that were not a good fit, allowing her to focus her efforts on the most promising leads.
Jane's success story is a testament to the power of a well-defined job search strategy. By taking the time to develop a personalized plan and committing to consistent effort, she was able to achieve her career goals in record time and with far less stress and frustration than she had experienced in her previous job search.
Her results demonstrate that with the right approach and mindset, you can significantly increase your chances of success and land your next job faster than you ever thought possible.
