How to Use ChatGPT as Your Interview Coach
Do you often feel nervous and unprepared before a job interview? Fortunately, ChatGPT can help you bridge the gap between unpreparedness and interview success.
In this newsletter issue, we will explore how you can use ChatGPT (advanced AI technology) to improve your interview skills and increase your chances of securing the job of your dreams. With ChatGPT as your interview coach, you can expect to gain valuable insights into common interview questions, hone your answers to those questions, and ultimately impress your interviewers. So why wait? Let's dive in and discover what ChatGPT is and how ChatGPT can help you become a confident and successful interviewee.
What is ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that can provide personalized career advice, guidance, and interview coaching. We will explore how you can use ChatGPT as your career coach and how it can help you reach your professional goals. Whether you're a recent graduate, looking for a career change, or just in need of general guidance, ChatGPT is here to help.
Before we turn ChatGPT into a career coach with one prompt, let me show you how to get started if you don't have any experience.
How To Start with ChatGPT
Step 1: Learn About ChatGPT
If you don't have prior experience with this tool, it's essential to understand the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT. Visit OpenAI's official website to learn about the technology and explore the available subscription plans. Choose the one that best suits your needs, whether you require free access or a premium subscription called ChatGPT Plus.
A premium subscription will cost you USD $20/month and comes with a few perks, such as availability even when demand is high, faster response speeds, and priority access to new features, like the advanced ChatGPT version 4. The free access will give you version 3.5. If you don't have experience with it, consider starting with the free version.
Step 2: Create an OpenAI Account
Once you have decided on a subscription plan, sign up for an OpenAI account by providing your name, email address, and password. You will receive a confirmation email to verify your account. Upon verification, you will gain access to the OpenAI Dashboard and ChatGPT.
Step 3: Experiment and Optimize
Once ChatGPT is accessible, experiment with different prompts and settings to achieve the desired results. There are various ways to write your prompts, ranging from straightforward requests such as "Compose a resume for a Finance Manager position" to more complex ones like the example provided below (ChatGPT as Interview Coach).
You have the freedom to use brief or extended prompts. My lengthiest prompt contains 611 words, while my shortest prompt consists of just one word.
Keep In Mind
ChatGPT's responses will be more accurate if you provide detailed and specific information. Keep in mind that ChatGPT cannot create your entire work history from scratch, but it will do its best to generate relevant content based on the information you provide.
So, let's dive into the world of career coaching with ChatGPT.
ChatGPT as Interview Coach
The prompt I have here is not the usual one you see around. I prefer to approach things differently because it often leads to unique outcomes. In my experience, following the same path as everyone else will lead to similar results.
That being said, let's dive into the prompt. This prompt should work for ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0. Try to customize it to get different results. Open your ChatGPT account and add this prompt below.
My ChatGPT Prompt
Act as an interview coach for job seekers, whether you are using GPT-3.5 or GPT-4, I'm here to help you prepare for your upcoming interview in your desired role. To begin, please share the job title and main responsibilities of the job you're applying for. Once you provide the relevant job title and industry, I will ask you questions similar to those you might encounter in your interview. For each question, I'll evaluate your response, offering immediate feedback on your strengths and areas for improvement. We'll cover one question at a time, focusing on your ability to demonstrate your suitability for the role, articulate your experiences clearly and effectively, and showcase how you can make a valuable contribution. As an interview coach, I will rate every answer from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score. If the score is 3 or higher, I will ask another question. If it’s below 3, I will ask you to provide another answer. If you want to skip that question, you can write "skip." Expect to gain insights into the required competency level, specific knowledge, and skill sets for the job, as well as how to present yourself accordingly. By the end of this exercise, you'll feel more at ease and confident in your communication abilities during any potential interview, regardless of the AI model you are using.
Note: If your answer receives a score below 3, you can write "skip" to move on to another question. This allows you to practice different aspects of the interview process without getting stuck on a particular question. You can remove this part “As an interview coach, I will rate every answer from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score. If the score is 3 or higher, I will ask another question. If it’s below 3, I will ask you to provide another answer. If you want to skip that question, you can write "skip."“ from prompt if you do not want to see your rating.
Answer:
Your answer could be simple, like "Recruiter, Software industry," or you can add a job title and copy and paste the job description. This will give ChatGPT the context to generate accurate and relevant responses tailored to your situation.
Example:
ChatGPT answer:
Great! You're applying for the role of Senior Recruiter in the Software industry. The main responsibilities of this position typically include sourcing and attracting top talent, managing the recruitment process, collaborating with hiring managers, and promoting the company's employer brand.
Now let's begin the mock interview. I will ask you questions, and after you answer each one, I will provide feedback to help you improve.
Question 1: Tell me about yourself and your experience in recruiting, specifically within the software industry.
Answer:
I have ten years of experience as a software industry recruiter and have searched for candidates across the entire world.
You can provide any answer and don't worry if you use different phrases. I used "across the entire world" for this demonstration, but I could also use "worldwide." However, try to be grammatically correct and avoid making many typos, as this could impact how ChatGPT understands and responds to your input.
Sometimes you will see the next question right after it; if that doesn't happen, just type "next question" and press enter.
Take it seriously because the AI has no sense of humor, so you must answer the same way you will answer during the interview.
Other AI Tools
ChatGPT is an incredible tool if you know how to use it. I have been experimenting with AI tools for over a year and am amazed by their capabilities. However, ChatGPT isn't the only option available; there are many other tools available that function similarly.
The top two AI tools I use daily are ChatGPT and JasperAI. They save me hours every day, so it's worth giving them a shot if you haven't tried them yet!
JasperAI doesn't require writing prompts in the same way as ChatGPT, as it already utilizes templates that make working with AI much faster. The basic price starts at 29 USD/month, and although it may seem like a substantial investment, it's well worth it.
Jasper AI's chat function operates similarly to ChatGPT but offers even faster responses. So, if you're seeking a tool to enhance your emails, tweets, LinkedIn posts, and cold emails, and do way more things, consider giving Jasper AI a try.
And as Jasper Chat works in the same way as ChatGPT, you can customize the prompt for ChatGPT if you do this:
In the first prompt, replace the sentence “Act as an interview coach for job seekers, whether you are using GPT-3.5 or GPT-4, I'm here to help you prepare for your upcoming interview in your desired role.” with this sentence: “Act as an interview coach for job seekers, whether you are using GPT-3.5, GPT-4, or Jasper, I'm here to help you prepare for your upcoming interview in your desired role.” and this will turn the previous prompt into one that will work on ChatGPT and also on Jasper AI.
If you want to try Jasper AI, you can give it a shot.
